It was about that time for another staycation, and this time hubby and I traveled to Getaway House Piney Woods in La Rue, TX. What caught my eye about this hidden gem was that I could get a real outdoor experience without sacrificing modern luxuries or being outdoors the entire time. Hey, don’t judge me—I’m a city girl.
So, we booked our night, headed to the grocery store for steak, asparagus, and beverages, then hit the road southeast to La Rue, TX. Just about an hour and a half away from our home outside of Dallas, TX, I always love a nice drive outside the city, and this one certainly did not disappoint.
About two miles away from the main highway, we turned down the kind of road you’re not supposed to drive down in scary movies. Weirdly enough, once we turned into Getaway Piney Woods, I was comforted by seeing other cabins. For me, it was the perfect balance of privacy while still knowing that neighbors were just a hop, skip, and a jump away.
Upon checking in, the space was everything I imagined. I was really impressed, especially with the bathroom and the hot shower. We had everything we needed. We went for a short hike and then came back to grill our steaks. My husband and I then sat at the little table and had dinner together—something we hadn’t done at home in a while. It was really nice.
I slept really well. My husband is a night owl because he works nights, but I could tell he really enjoyed the downtime as well. We checked out the next morning feeling rested and recharged. One other thing worth mentioning was the hospitality. The staff made sure to text me a couple of hours before check-in and even followed up later to say they hoped we returned home safely. It’s the small things like this that I appreciate.
We did a one-night stay as a trial run, but we are already talking about our next visit to Getaway Piney Woods.
